Retro51 x IWM® - Celebrating
History with Duxford Icon
September, 23, 2024
Duxford, UK — Imperial War Museums (IWM) has teamed up with renowned U.S. pen maker Retro51 to create a stunning collection of Tornado Rollerball pens, celebrating the rich history of the iconic N3200 Spitfire.
The pen’s design is inspired by the Supermarine Spitfire Mark 1a, a historic aircraft that first took flight in 1939. Assigned to No. 19 Squadron at RAF Duxford in April 1940, this Spitfire played a critical role during Operation Dynamo, the daring Dunkirk evacuation. However, its mission came to an abrupt end when it crash-landed on a beach near Calais. The aircraft sank into the sand and remained buried for 45 years until it was rediscovered by strong tidal currents in 1986.
After a meticulous restoration completed in 2015, the N3200 Spitfire was returned to its former glory and donated to IWM. Today, visitors to IWM Duxford can see the aircraft both on display and soaring over the historic airfield, serving as a reminder of its resilience and the bravery of the pilots who flew it.
Retro51’s N3200 Spitfire rollerball pen pays tribute to this legendary aircraft. The pen’s barrel is acid-etched with rivets and panels, then painted in an authentic camouflage pattern to replicate the plane’s exterior. Details like the Spitfire’s tail numbers, the British Roundel, and Britain’s tri-color fin flash are featured prominently. Black-nickel accents, the IWM logo engraved on the top ring, and individual serial numbers add a touch of exclusivity. Each pen comes in special commemorative packaging adorned with foil-stamped graphics inspired by the Spitfire’s design.
This collaboration is more than just a pen release—it’s a celebration of history. The N3200 Spitfire remains a favorite at IWM Duxford, offering visitors a chance to connect with a vital piece of aviation heritage. Whether viewed up close in the exhibition space or seen soaring above the airfield, the aircraft continues to captivate audiences.
The partnership between IWM and Retro51 is just the beginning of a series of unique writing instruments designed to bring history to life. These pens allow collectors and history enthusiasts to carry a piece of the past with them—putting a story, quite literally, in their hands.
